Why I Went Virtual With My Practice

The COVID-19 pandemic changed many things about how we interact with one another, and the use of conferencing technology such as Zoom exploded. Work, school, and doctor’s appointments were conducted virtually, and during lockdown, one of the only ways to connect with our loved ones was through a screen.
By the time I opened my psychotherapy practice in April 2022, many things had gone back to a relative norm. Despite this, it became clear that hybrid work, online classes, and telehealth weren’t going anywhere. The landscape of how we interact with one another had permanently expanded. I had been successfully providing individual and group therapy via Zoom since 2020 and found that it had many benefits for my clients. It also afforded me a degree of work-life balance that I had never known. For me, the decision was clear – my practice was going to be totally virtual.
Some people are wary of meeting with their therapist online, and that’s understandable. It’s very different from what most of us are used to. So why should you give virtual therapy (aka teletherapy) a try? Here are some factors to consider:
Convenience – One of the big barriers to attending therapy is a shortage of time. You’re a busy person! At my practice, you can meet with me from your home or office on your lunch break, between meetings, or before or after you start your day. If you’re a student, simply log on from your dorm, apartment, or wherever you call home.
Accessibility – I can work with clients who live anywhere in the state of Georgia, and you can meet with me anywhere you have privacy and internet access or cell service. Having trouble leaving the house? Not feeling your best? We can still see one another, and our session might even help you get going.
Comfort – Want to do therapy in your PJs? The ability to do therapy with a furry best friend by your side can make a huge difference when it comes to getting through the tough stuff. It’s pretty great for me, as well – I love cat and dog cameos! Additionally, meeting with me in your home or another safe space provides the benefit of having things around you that can help ground or soothe you, like a favorite candle or blanket.
Security – I use a HIPAA compliant version of Zoom, which means that your privacy is guaranteed. Despite the amazing increase in acceptance of getting support for your mental wellness, it’s not unusual to feel anxious about being seen walking into or out of a therapist’s office. When you meet with me, you never have to worry about that. Just make sure to let friends, family, or coworkers know not to disturb you!
Effectiveness – Studies have shown (like this one) that teletherapy with a video component is just as effective as in-person therapy, so you can be sure that you’re receiving high-quality care.
All in all, there’s a lot to be gained by going virtual with your therapy. If you’re still feeling uncertain, feel free and schedule a 15-minute consultation call with me! You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and see if teletherapy is a good fit for you. Talk to you soon!
